College nominated for national TES award

South Essex College has been shortlisted for a national TES FE award in the support for learners category.

The college’s supported internship scheme has gained the nomination. The programme is aimed at students who have additional needs and are ready for the world of work.

It’s designed to help students take the next step into sustainable employment, by working through a set of employability training sessions in the classroom with a job coach and a significant work experience placement with a local supportive employer.

Paul Sampson-Mileham, Head of Learning and Progression at the college, said: “It is a real credit to the Job Coaching team that we have been nominated. It goes to show that with the right support in place learners with additional needs can achieve and contribute to their local community and economy.”

Karen Fox, Head of Additional Learning Support at the college, said: “It’s such an honour to be shortlisted, the programme has gone from strength to strength. It’s helping to create a diverse workforce and raise the quality of life for many young people with additional learning needs.”

TES FE Editor, Stephen Exley, said: “Excellent practice exists right across the further education sector, and those shortlisted for the 2020 TES FE Awards are the cream of the crop. Our judges were extremely impressed with the calibre of entries. To be shortlisted is an extraordinary achievement.”

Winners are announced on Friday 20 March at a glitzy awards evening taking place at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
