Breck Foundation raises students' awareness of online safety

Lorin LaFave, the mother of Breck Bednar and creator of The Breck Foundation, delivered an educational talk to students across South Essex College to raise awareness of the dangers of online gaming.

Talks were held at all campuses to share Breck’s story and give insights into the warning signs and prevention of online grooming.

The charity was set up in 2014 in response to the tragic murder of Breck Bednar to educate students, parents and communities to look out for the dangers so no other family would have to experience this tragedy.

Lorin discussed Breck’s change in behaviour and warning signs before the incident, outlining the advice given to Breck before meeting Lewis. She told students about how Lewis manipulated Breck and isolated him from his friends and family.

At the end of the talk, students and staff were given tips, guidance and resources to recognise the signs of online grooming and where to go to report concerns.

Katherine Taylor, Enrichment Associate at South Essex College, said:
“It has been great to have Lorin come to the college and talk to students about online grooming. Our students were raised in a digital world so it is important to educate them on the signs and dangers of online gaming and where to get advice.”

The Breck Foundation delivers talks to schools, colleges and safeguarding professionals across the country to raise awareness of internet safety and is currently running a social media campaign with #playvirtuallivereal
