Our training provision
Training is an important investment, and it has to make a difference where it matters the most. Our commercial training provision offers a wide range of courses as part of your staff’s Continued Professional Development (CPD). Our CPD courses are high quality, accredited or bespoke training programmes, designed to equip attending delegates with skills and knowledge which can immediately be applied in the workplace. Often, they allow you and your business to meet legislative or regulatory requirements.

HGV/LGV Driving Schools
Covering Essex and the Midlands

If you are looking to kickstart a high-powered career in the commercial driving industry, South Essex College Logistics department have two of their own DVSA (Driver Vehicle Standards Agency) accredited LGV driving schools located in Basildon Essex and Wellesbourne in the Midlands. The college offer comprehensive training programs at both schools which are designed to put you in the driver’s seat to success.

For individuals
Duration: 16 weeks.
Funding: government-funded, making it accessible to a wide range of participants.
Comprehensive Training: the program covers all necessary aspects of LGV driving, including:
- Classroom instruction on driving theory
- Practical driving skills and manoeuvring
- Safety protocols and regulations
- Vehicle maintenance and inspections
Testing: preparation for and administration of the Driver Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) tests required for LGV certification.
Support: ongoing support throughout the program to ensure student success, including:
- Study materials
- Tutoring and mentoring
- Job placement assistance after completion
Co-funded training for employers
In addition to the fully-funded bootcamp, South Essex College also offers co-funded training for employers looking to upskill their current drivers.
This initiative provides:
- Partial funding: shared costs between the government and employers, making it a cost-effective way for businesses to enhance their workforce's skills
- Upskilling opportunities: employers can provide their drivers with advanced training, ensuring they are up-to-date with the latest industry standards and regulations
- Flexible training options: tailored training schedules to fit around the operational needs of the business
Commercial courses
CompEx training courses are essential for anyone that is responsible for employing or sending people to work in any flammable atmosphere or Hazardous area plant where DSEAR 2002 Regulations apply (ie: Company Directors, Human Resource staff, project managers, Facilities Management staff and site supervisor’s). These courses will also be invaluable to those electrical craftsperson’s who do not currently work in hazardous atmospheres or have little existing experience, and wish to gain a theoretical overview in preparation for attending the full Ex01–Ex04 competency course at a later date.
Those working on the design, installation and inspection and testing of wiring systems will need to be prepared for the changes in order to remain compliant as some of the changes will affect most electrical installation work.
Required training for persons working on commercial vessels in the UK (MGM550). These courses are suitable for private or commercial sector with Marine Hybrid interest. These are the only courses in the UK to fall in line with the workboat codes MGN550 to provide suitable training in Hybrid/Electric vessel propulsion. The course factors on the safety side of hybrid system working with state of the art resources for a hands on approach to Hybrid.
Aimed at those working in the motor vehicle profession who want to expand their skills to offer support for Electric/Hybrid vehicles. These courses are designed for learners who maintain and repair electric/hybrid vehicles. It contains the knowledge and skills required to work safely in and around the vehicle's high and low voltage electrical system and electric drive train system whilst carrying out repairs or maintenance. Upon completion of these qualifications, technicians will be able to practically demonstrate that they have the skills required for repairing vehicles with low and high voltage electric technologies.
CompEx Electrical Installation & Inspection (Ex01–Ex04)
This five-day course runs throughout the year and provides electrical and instrument technicians with the necessary competence to work in potentially explosive environments.

The course is intended for those who have previously successfully completed the CompEx main course module(s) i.e. EX01, EX02, EX03, EX04 and whose five-year Certificate of Core Competence is due to expire.

The C&G 2382-22 18th Edition runs throughout the year and covers the Wiring Regulations for Electrical Installers.
