Overview
Apprentices will develop the essential skills, knowledge and behaviours to become fully competent as a General Welder (Arc Processes).
Aspects of the role may include:
- Welding principles and techniques
- Using Welding tools
- General welding
- Health and safety practices

Entry Requirements
- Employed in a trade/industry related to the apprenticeship.
You will need to find employment in a related trade/industry before applying for the apprenticeship programme you wish to complete. - Set by the employer but apprentices must demonstrate via initial assessment that they are working at Entry Level 3 in both English and maths unless an Education Health and Care Plan is held.
Course Structure
Induction (First six weeks)
- Programme overview/unit selection
- English and maths diagnostic – with Functional Skills support (where identified)
- Health and Safety, Equality and Diversity, Prevent and British Values
- Expectations and induction targets
- End-Point Assessment requirements
On-programme (Months 01 - 15)
- Day release weekly classroom sessions to complete Certificate in Welding and Fabrication
- Work-based assessment visits every 4-6weeks for the duration of the apprenticeship
- Completion Of the ABC Certificate in Welding and Fabrication
- Development of an e-portfolio of evidence
- Progress reviews every 10 weeks
- Functional Skills delivery and exams (where required)
Gateway (Months 15 - 18)
- All skills, knowledge and behaviours achieved and evidenced
- Preparation for knowledge and behaviours test
- Mock practical skills test
- Confirm completion of English and maths
- Gateway confirmation declaration
End-point assessment (1 day during final 4 months)
(carried out by an accredited third party provider):
- Knowledge test
- Professional Interview
- Practical/knowledge examination
Certification (Final 4 - 6 weeks of programme)
- ABC Level 2 Certificate in Welding and Fabrication
- Functional Skills English and maths
- Apprenticeship with certification from the Institute of Apprenticeships
- Membership to Professional Bodies if desired
Assessment & Feedback
Apprenticeship Standard
An Apprenticeship Standard programme is occupation focused and concentrates on the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours required to complete the programme successfully.
What Next...
- Employment as a multipositional welder or high integrity welder
- Employment as a welding instructor (teaching welding inspection and management)
